Williams, Coventry tons guide Tuskers to victory

HARARE - Sean Williams and Charles Coventry both scored centuries yesterday to guide Matabeleland Tuskers to a workmanlike three-wicket win over Midwest Rhinos in a closely-fought Logan Cup match.

The two purebred Bulawayo cricketers —who are hoping to reclaim their places in the Zimbabwe national side after lengthy absences from the team — engineered Matabeleland’s win in impressive fashion on the final day at Kwekwe Sports Club after the hosts had appeared well on course on day three.

Rhinos were headed for victory at stumps on day three after Malcolm Waller’s double century and Brendan Taylor’s ton seemingly pulled the game away from the Bulawayo side, leaving them needing 250 to win on the final day yesterday with six wickets in hand.

But Williams and Coventry, supported by former Zimbabwe international Sean Ervine’s 55, set about the home bowling with gusto to overhaul Midwest’s total with three wickets in hand.

Williams cracked 118 runs from 153 balls in the middle order while wicketkeeper Coventry hit Simon Mugava for six over mid-off for the winning runs to close the match unbeaten on 106 runs from 113 deliveries.

Tuskers chased down hosts Rhinos’ winning target of 340 runs inside 77.3 overs, reaching 346 runs with three wickets to spare.

The win saw defending champions and log leaders Tuskers extend their lead on the log table to 13 points.

Tuskers have now won all their four matches while Rhinos, Manicaland Mountaineers and Southern Rocks all have 14 points from the same number of games with only the net run rate separating them in their respective second, third and fourth positions.

Ailing giants Mashonaland Eagles, who are yet to win a match in the domestic first-class competition this season, anchor the table with one point from four matches.
