Sables suffer fourth straight defeat
Thursday, 13 December 2012 15:00
HARARE - Belgium blitzed Zimbabwe 28-11 in the two teams’ second game of the Emirates Airline Cup of Nations at The Sevens in Dubai yesterday.

The result means the African champions have now lost four tests on the trot following their opening Emirates Cup defeat to title holders Hong Kong on Saturday.

The Sables were quick out of the blocks, opening their account as early at the sixth minute through flyhalf Tichafara Makwanya, who scored a penalty.

The experienced Old Hararians halfback stretched the lead to 6-0 few minutes later with another penalty.

Belgium quickly reduced the deficit to one point after they replied with an unconverted try by Alexis Cuffolo.

The Europeans grabbed the lead for the first in the match when the Sables were caught wanting at the contact point and were punished by a three pointer from Dennis Eppe.

Zimbabwe restored their lead right at the death of the first half when eighthman Takunda Chifokoyo dived over for an unconverted try.

In the second half, all hell broke loose for the Sables as they leaked 20 points, which proved to be their worst enemy.

The team’s discipline also left a lot to be desired. Lock Jan Ferreira and centre Tommy Nelson were sin-binned during the second half.

Second row Sanile Sibanda was also given his marching order by the referee.

Belgium made the numeric advantage count with wing Janssen Daniel Janssen and lock Kevin Damines both scoring tries.

Their last points came from a penalty try as the Belgians exerted a lot of pressure on a Sables seven-man scrum, which gave the referee no option but to award the touch down. - Sports Writer
