HARARE - The Triathlon Association of Zimbabwe (Taz) has entered the final half of its domestic season with preparations for the South Africa Provincial Championships set for March in full swing.

The South African Triathlon Provincial Championships will be held in East London on March 17. National trials resumed last weekend for three junior age-groups teams in the Under 13-15, 16-17 and 18-19 categories.

The trials will be on again this weekend before the final phase of selection takes place during the National Championships on March 3.

“We are mid-way through our season and selection for a junior squad to travel to the SA Triathlon Provincial Championships on March 17 are on-going,” Taz president Rick Fulton told the Daily News yesterday.

“Last week and this coming week will be the third and fourth selection events with the final and most important event, our National Championships, coming up on March 3. The selection system is based on points gained from these individual events from first down to 10th and accumulative points based on a minimum of 21 points.”

Meanwhile, leading girls’ Under 19 triathlete Laurelle Brown is set to move over to the Under-23 Elite group as she turns 19 in October.

Brown capped a fine season last year, winning several accolades among them, gold medals in the domestic National Championships, the South African Championships as well as the African Continental Championships held in Mauritius.

In the same year, Brown was voted Junior Triathlete of the Year and accorded National Junior Colours by Taz. The 18 year-old former Peterhouse student is widely regarded as the next big thing in local triathlon following the retirement of elite male athlete Chris Felgate.
