FC Strikers close gap at the top
Tuesday, 02 October 2012 11:07
HARARE - FC Strikers were the biggest winners in the Central Region Division One over the weekend, beating visiting army side Tongogara 5-0 at Dulibadzimu Stadium on Saturday.

With the win, the Beitbridge side closed the gap between them and log leaders Tripple B to nine points.

Tripple B dropped two points after being held to a goalless draw by Airstars at Rutendo Stadium.

Strikers, who have a game in hand, will reduce the gap to six if they manage to beat Airstars in the rescheduled match.

Strikers official Rodlet Chigwinya was ecstatic after the win, saying they are now more than determined to fight for the title than before.

“We are pleased with this win because it’s a big morale booster for us going into the last hurdle,” Chigwinya told the Daily News yesterday.

“With our form, we are going to have a strong finish and hopefully win all our remaining fixtures. The match against Tripple B is going to be the decider because if we manage to beat them, the gap will be reduced to three points; that is if we win all our games.”

Third-placed Chapungu, who are on 42 points, maintained pressure on the two Beitbridge sides with a 3-1 win over Chrome Stars. Chapungu coach John Nyikadzino insists his side is still in the title race despite being 10 points behind log leaders Tripple B with eight games before the end of the season.

The Airforce side trail second-placed Strikers by a point and is still to meet log leaders Tripple B.

Vumbachikwe reclaimed the fourth position from Chrome Stars after beating Midlands State University 2-1 at Forbes and Thompson while Silo United beat NewZimsteel 3-1 to move into sixth position.

Hwahwa returned to winning ways with an emphatic 4-0 win over relegation threatened Jessie Mine. Blanket Mine failed in their fight for survival when they lost 1-0 to Town United at Dulibadzimu on Sunday.
