JOHANNESBURG - The life ban imposed on players and officials implicated in the Asiagate match-fixing scandal have not yet taken effect in South Africa.

The PSL says it will only act on those implicated after it has been given the directive to do so by the country’s football governing body, Safa.

“We have not been given any written instructions by Safa (regarding the Asiagate bans). We will only act when this happens,” PSL communications manager Connie Motshumi tells KickOff.com.

“I cannot make any speculations right now about what will happen because we have not been given any instructions.

This means Mamelodi Sundowns defender Method Mwanjali, who is part of the 15 banned players, is likely to be considered for selection for the Telkom Knockout Cup match against University of Pretoria tonight.

While Mwanjali will be appealing against the life ban, Sundowns owner Patrick Motsepe is on record saying he will go hard on all players found guilty of any wrongdoing in the scandal.

Bidvest Wits defender Thomas Sweswe and Black Leopards coach Sunday Chidzambwa were also handed life bans by Zifa, but were in action for their respective clubs in the Telkom Cup matches played over the weekend.

According to Fifa statutes, the ban on the players and officials will only have a worldwide effect after the governing body’s endorsement. — KickOff.com
