BULWAYO - Hwange guaranteed their Premiership survival with an emphatic victory over relegated Quelaton in a one-sided Castle Larger premiership match yesterday.

The coal miners scored through Zambian expatriate Aaron Katebe, Winston Mhango, Tawanda Mareya, David Boriwondo and an own goal by Quelaton fullback Wilberforce Chiramba. After the match, a relieved Hwange coach Nation Dube said their plan of getting an early goal to unsettle the home team had worked to perfection.

“We just told the boys to have a go at Quelaton and unsettle them with an early goal and they did exactly that and from there we were on the right track,” Dube said.

The impressive Katebe headed Chipangano into the lead on seven minutes when he rose above the Quelaton defence to head home a Winston Mhango corner kick.

Quelaton’s Chiramba then beat his goalkeeper Freedom Magaba in a bid to clear a cross by the hard running Tawanda Mareya on 23 minutes.

The goals kept flowing, and after 35 minutes Mareya’s cut back found Mhango inside the box — the stocky midfielder obliged with a powerful shot from inside the box for the visitors’ third of the day.

Mareya then got his name on the score sheet five minutes before halftime when he outpaced Quelaton defender Sikhumbulani Dube before slotting the ball past an on-rushing Magaba.

Farai Vimisai had supplied the long pass for Mareya.

That fourth goal marked the end of Magaba’s participation in the match as he did not return after the half time break, as Quealaton tried to stem the flow of goals by replacing him with Tapiwanashe Marime.

The goalkeeping change did not stop Hwange from getting their fifth of the day on 53 minutes when central defender David Boriwondo headed in a corner kick by right back Thonisani Sibelo.

The change did keep the scoreline on single digits though Magaba went on to produce some top-drawer saves to deny the marauding visitors.

Quelaton head coach Farai Sibanda was very disappointed at the way his charges failed to put up a fight.
