HARARE - Blue Rangers have been forced to sell their Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL) Division One slot following erratic funding and subsequent relegation from the Castle Premier Soccer League (PSL) last week.

Rangers were demoted from the PSL after finishing third from bottom in the just-ended top flight season.

Club secretary Isheanopa Ruvanza yesterday said it had become “uneconomical and outside the interest of football development” to sustain the team.   

The club was bankrolled by Blue Ribbon in their debut top flight season last term before the milling company pulled the plug on the deal.

World Wide Scholarships (WWS) came on board during the course of the just-ended 2012 season, but the partnership was short-lived.

WWS were shown the exit door by Rangers directors due to their failure to hold up their end of the bargain.

“We have been looking for sponsorship for the whole year, but nothing has materialised and now that we are in Division One and still I don’t see anything coming through. Reality is football needs funding. We simply don’t have both.

“It’s in the best interest of football for us to release the franchise.  All the players have one year contracts that end in December so they are free to join clubs of their choices.”
