HARARE - Much has been said about his unorthodox stance and lack of taste for golfing apparel.

But Day Muyambo remains unmoved.

The 52-year-old, who fashioned a memorable comeback to outshine Sunshine Tour card holder Ryan Cairns by one shot en route to the Golden Pilsener Harare Open win at Chapman Golf Club on Sunday, reckons it’s not about the “body of a car that is important but the size of the engine.”

“Who cares?” he says.

“I mean, at the end of the day I was wearing a branded cap which is from Golden Pilsener, supporting the sponsor.  I stand awkward but the ball is not awkward it always goes straight and that’s what matters.”
With rounds of 71, 69 and 70 Muyambo finished with a gross total score of six-under-par 210 to walk away with the winner’s purse of $4 500.

Having started the third and final round, two shots behind overnight leader Cairns, Muyambo needed to dig deep to come out victorious.

At that stage it seemed the odds were heavily stacked against the Nyatsimba Mutota champion given the inspirational form Cairns has exhibited of late, having won five professional titles in the last 12 months.

However, Muyambo is not one to shy away from a challenges.

“I started brightly, I birdied number one and I almost got a hole in one on number three, from there I never looked back,” Muyambo says of his dream start which effectively put Cairns on the ropes.

 “I was starting to doubt myself as the day went on, they call me “old man, old man” in the showers and I was starting to think age will get the best of me.

“But I am happy to notch one over the young guys. I’m just happy to have won especially as these are my sunset years.”

Cairns would have felt undone after he missed a putt on the final hole which Muyambo capitalised on with a birdie to seal a one shot victory over the well-travelled 28-year-old who ended with a total score of five-under-par 211.

The Vodacom Origins of Golf champion conceded defeat: “He had a lot of good shots, you can’t take that away from him. He played better than I did on the day.”

Day’s son, Nyasha, who finished in fourth place with two-over-par 218 led the wild celebrations that ensued as the Muyambo family act continued to light up Zimbabwean golf.

“I took Nyasha down, he had hunted me in (the recent) Hwange Open. But he was the first one to congratulate me; I hope it rubs onto him.”

Muyambo was happy with Golden Pilsener’s support.

“They have promised to be with us for the future. I’m hoping the tournament will keep growing and it will be played here and in other cities so that I don’t keep taking the trophy.”

Muyambo is now eyeing the European Seniors Tour.
