Rangers ease relegation worries

HARARE - Blue Rangers teenager David Temwanjira scored a brace to help his side beat Harare City yesterday in a result described by coach Partson Ndabambi as the turning point in their fight for survival.

With that result, Rangers take their tally to 23 points from 25 games, two points shy of Hwange who occupy the last safe slot.

“Well this is the turning point in our fight against relegation,” Ndabambi said.

“For the first time we have picked up two wins from two games. Our lives depended on this result I’m happy we have managed to win. We have five more games this season and that’s more than enough to take us home.”
Harare City coach Bigboy Mawiwi expressed disappointment with his team’s performance.

“It was a bad day in the office for us,” Mawiwi said.

“We never got going. We were talking about complacency this whole week and having the right attitude. It’s unfortunate today we didn’t play as a team which is our strength.”

In a game of few chances and very little creativity from both sides, only Temwanjira’s goals proved the difference.

The match was delayed by 30 minutes owing to a clash of kits.

Temwanjira netted his first goal in the 60th after slamming home a Kuda Mazhambe’s cross.

The 19-year-old sealed Rangers’ victory two minutes into added time with a well taken shot from outside the box that beat an outstretched Maxwell Nyamupangedengu, the Sunshine Boys keeper.

With Rangers captain Nyasha Chazika marshalling his defence with aplomb, City’s attack was largely kept under lock and the usually lively Silas Songani was marked out of the game.

The Sunshine Boys’ only realistic chance came in the 75th minute from Trymore Nyamadzawo’s acrobatic shot that missed the top right by inches.
