HARARE - The Zimbabwean rowing team put up an impressive show at the eighth African Rowing Championships held in Alexandria, Egypt, where rowers from nine countries competed.

Led by Micheen Thornycroft, the Zimbabwean team scooped eight medals including three gold, three silver and two bronze.

Thornycroft won the women’s single sculls whilst Amina Rouba of Algeria finished second.

The Algerians, however, had the upper hand in the women’s double where Thornycroft, with partner Eliza Fraser-MacKenzie, finished second to the North Africans.

At the close of racing in the 16 events — six of them junior races — Egypt was at the top of the medals table with nine gold medals.

Zimbabwe finished third with three gold medals, one from Thornycroft and two from Junior sculler Murray Faber.

Faber, a Peterhouse College student, won the junior men’s single sculls and partnered Peter Percell-Gilpin to win the junior men’s double sculls.

Purcell-Gilpen went on to win bronze in the senior men’s single scull while Daniella du Toit won silver in the junior women’s single scull.

The pair of du Toit and Mackenzie finished in third place in the junior women’s double.

The African Rowing Championships began in 2003 and it was last held in Tunisia in 2010. At the 2010 regatta, Egypt headed the medals table.
