Chicken Inn ‘chicken out’ of Africa

HARARE - Premier Soccer League (PSL) club Chicken Inn have ruled themselves out of the Caf Confederation Cup while Monomotapa are still hopeful of representing the country in the second-tier competition after the two clubs missed Friday’s registration deadline.

Chicken Inn, who finished third in the just-ended Castle Premiership season, wrote to Zifa informing them of their unavailability to represent the country in the continental tournament.

The Gamecocks argue that attempting to “conquer Africa before conquering Zimbabwe,” is a pipeline dream.

“It’s not a matter of finances,” Chicken Inn secretary Tavengwa Hara told the Daily News yesterday.

 “We are just not prepared.”

Monomotapa, who ended fourth in the just ended season, maintain they will not play in the second tier competition if they are not funded by Mbada Diamonds Company.

Mbada Diamonds Company sponsors the richest knock out tournament in Zimbabwe, whose winner is guaranteed $150 000 worth of accommodation and air ticket sponsorship subsidy to participate in the Caf Confederation Cup.

Dynamos beat Monomotapa 2-0 to retain the title they won last year.

However, Dynamos are also Zimbabwean champions and thus will represent the country in the more competitive African Champions League, handing Monomotapa the Caf ticket.

“If Mbada agrees to fund us then we pay the fine for late registration. This is not new, in some years our league finished as late as December 15 but we have still managed to register,” he said.
