HARARE - Soldiers manning the main entrance at Rufaro Stadium yesterday denied a Daily News journalist entry to cover Black Rhinos’ charity match against CAPS United.
Sports reporter Blessings Mashaya was told by the overzealous soldiers that since it was only a charity match, the army side did not require media coverage, especially from this paper.
Even after producing his media accreditation card in an attempt to identify himself, Mashaya was told he was still not welcome and that he needed an “invitation” from the army to cover the match.
“This is a charity match and not for journalists. We want to raise money and to make things worse you are from the Daily News so it’s better for you to go back. You are not permitted to cover this match,” said one of the soldiers, adding on:
“Yes we have seen your Press card but we do not need any help from you in as far as this match is concerned. If you continue upsetting us we will take action. Now, leave.”
Army side Black Rhinos are returning to the Castle Premiership having spent four seasons in division one. They won the Northern Region division one championship last season to complete their comeback.
