‘Denver must prove himself’
Thursday, 29 November 2012 10:50
HARARE - He might have taken Zimbabwean domestic football by storm in the just-ended 2012 season, but South African outfit Bidvest Wits insists Dynamos wizard Denver Mukamba still needs to prove himself that he has the required “quality” to play for them.

Mukamba arrived in Johannesburg this week for a week-long trial stint with The Students following a splendid season with Dynamos, who he helped to a second league and cup double in as many seasons.

South Africa’s Soca Laduma reports that Wits head coach Antonio Lopez Habas and his technical team are assessing the 20-year-old Dynamos playmaker with a view of adding him to their-studded squad in the upcoming January transfer window.

Another challenge for the lanky Zimbabwe international is that Wits are only left with one slot on their foreign player quota, meaning Mukamba must prove he is a gamble worth taking.

Mukamba was by quite some distance the Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League’s most outstanding player in an all-conquering 2012 season for Dynamos, producing one stellar performance after another in a year he was almost unplayable at times.

But the undertone coming across from the Wits camp is that Mukamba’s performances in the Zimbabwean league, on its own, is not sufficient yardstick to offer him a contract, so they have asked to have another look.

“The boy is here. He came for training with us,” said Wits team manager George Mogotsi. “He arrived this week. I cannot say much about him because the coach has to decide. He is a good player. We have one slot for a foreign player but we need quality. The technical team will make a decision on him.”

Should Wits sign Mukamba, he could team up with countrymen Tinashe Nengomasha and Thomas Sweswe at the Johannesburg-based club. - Sports Writer
