HARARE - Three local golfers will take part in the BMG Classic Qualifying tournament next Wednesday at the Glendower Golf Club in Gauteng, South Africa.

Akil Yousuf, Mohammad Mandhu and Michael Hough must all play the pre-Q as they are yet to earn their Sunshine Tour exemption card yet.

If the three qualify, they will join the rest of the 156 field when the BMG Classic tournament starts on October 19.

Yousuf was confident of success at the pre-Q and is already looking forward to make the cut when the tournament commences.

“As it stands I should be able to qualify for the tournament at the pre-Q,” Yousuf told the Daily News yesterday.

“I’m playing some really decent golf of late and I’m pretty confident of doing well at the BMG Classic.

“Judging by my form, I should also be in contention for making the cut at the tournament.”

The three golfers will be battling it out with 27 other contenders for a place in the tournament proper.

This will be Yousuf’s sixth tournament on the Sunshine Tour after missing the cut on all previous occasions.

“It’s not going to be easy because out of the field of 156 only the top 40 or ties will make the cut,” he said.

“Golf is an unpredictable game and it all depends on how you perform on the given day which determines whether you will make the cut.”

This will be Mandhu’s sixth tournament on the circuit with his best finish being the 62 place he managed at the Golden Pilsner Zimbabwe Open back in April.

The 22-year-old has failed to make the cut in the previous four tournaments.

South African James Kamte is the BMG Classic defending champion after he won last year’s edition.

Kamte won the tile when he beat Dawie Van der Walt in a play-off round after the two had been tied on nine-under 207.
