Tuskers, Rhinos hope to keep momentum

HARARE - Castle Logan Cup log leaders Matabeleland Tuskers and second-placed Midwest Rhinos get into the fourth round of matches vying for outright wins to consolidate their position at the summit of the table.

A defeat for one of the sides will see the other opening a huge gap in the country’s premier first class competition.

Tuskers are tied on 14 points from two matches with Rhinos while Manicaland Mountaineers and Southern Rocks, who are both on seven points, occupy third and fourth places from two and three matches respectively.

Mashonaland Eagles are rooted at the bottom of the table with no points from three attempts.

Tuskers, who are the defending champions, host struggling Harare side Mashonaland Eagles at Queens Sports Club starting today.

The host thumped Southern Rocks by 10 wickets at the same venue last week and will be fancying their chances against struggling Eagles.

Rocks are coached by former Tuskers mentor Dave Houghton, who guided the Bulawayo side to back-to-back Logan Cup victories in the last two seasons.

Mashonaland Eagles have lost all their three Logan Cup matches this season and will be counting on new coach Steve Mangongo to turn around fortunes at the Harare franchise.

In his first game in charge, Mangongo succumbed to a 323-run defeat to a Mark Vermeulen-inspired Rhinos at Harare Sports Club last week.

Mangongo’s arrival at Eagles saw former Zimbabwe captain Prosper Utseya shifting base from Manicaland Mountaineers while seamer Taurai Muzarabani also joined from Masvingo’s Southern Rocks.

Young Glenshire Cricket Club pace bowler Tafadzwa Muzarawetu was handed his first-class debut but their presence could not stop Rhinos trampling on them.

At Mutare Sports Club, Mountaineers are at home against Southern Rocks, who recorded their first win in the longer version by beating Eagles at Harare Sports Club at the beginning of the season.
