From Glamour Boy to Clever Boy

HARARE - Dynamos midfield ace Denver Mukamba has completed his much-awaited switch to South African side Bidvest Wits after signing a two-year contract yesterday.

Mukamba had medicals at the Johannesburg-based club last week and the former Kiglon and Dynamos playmaker passed the examination before penning the deal yesterday afternoon with an option of a two-year extension.

Wits had a chance to sign Mukamba midway in the domestic Premiership last season after he spent an extended time on trials at Braamfontein, but the Super Diski club decided, at the last minute, against sealing a deal.

The 20-year-old fell victim to a technical shake up which saw Roger De Sa being replaced by Antonio Lopez Habas.

Mukamba had trials twice at the Absa Premiership club last year and impressed the two club’s previous coaches, De Sa and his successor Habas.

The two coaches might have parted ways with The Clever Boys, but the Zimbabwean Soccer Star of the Year had done enough to convince everyone at the club that he is indeed a real deal.

Mukamba have been training with The Clever Boys for the past week under the watchful eye of new coach Clive Barker. He becomes the first major signing for The Students in this January transfer window.

“After weeks of waiting, I can confirm that everything has been completed and Mukamba has signed a two-year deal for Bidvest Wits,” Mukamba’s manager Gibson Mahachi revealed to Daily News yesterday.

“His deal carries an option of another two-year extension and it’s now down to business at his new club.
He is a good player and I hope he will adjust quickly.”

Mukamba have proved his critics wrong after speculation at some point, including sick jokes on Internet, in which he was dismissed as a flop who wasn’t good enough to play for a modest Super Diski team like Bidvest Wits.

Mukamba could make his Wits debut on February 13 when Wits resume their campaign against Sunday Chidzambwa’s Black Leopards.

The dazzling midfielder was deservingly voted Zimbabwe’s finest footballer of the year following a remarkable season for the 19-times Zimbabwean champions.

Mukamba joined the Zimbabwean pair of Tinashe Nengomasha and Thomas Sweswe who are already in The Clever Boys’ ranks.

While Mukamba has completed his move to Wits, Dynamos are set to lose more players as Simba Sithole is also reportedly on the radar of another South African giant, SuperSport United, and is set to go for trials this week.

Forward Roderick Mutuma left the country yesterday for Bloemfontein Celtic where he is expected to undergo a two-week trial stint.

The news is a blow for the Glamour Boys, who are working towards assembling a competitive squad for this year’s African Champions League campaign.

A dose of good news for the club is that the Hwange duo of defender Aaron Katebe and striker Francesco Zikumbawire are understood to have been released to join the champions in camp this week. - Godknows Matarutse
