Sunday, 05 May 2013 14:08
HARARE - Prince Edward School basketball team has been riding high posting some impressive results on the road this year.

Recently the team finished on second place at Durban Schools Basketball Invitational tournament.

The team known as the Panthers failed to defend the title they won last year after they went down to Durban High School 78-55 in the final.

PE went to the second quarter break leading 40-39 however the hosts came back a determined side and went on to win the remaining two quarters.

The Panthers beat Kearsney College 80-57 in the quarterfinals to progress to the semifinals where they beat St Albans College 75-56.

Other Zimbabwean schools that took part in the tournament were Gateway, Watershed and Peterhouse, who all bowed out of the tourney in the group stages.

Last year, the team were crowned the champions of Harare Schools League after finishing the season without a defeat.

The Panthers went on to win the National Basketball Top Schools championship last year.

PE Teacher In Charge of Basketball, Sledge Chinyoka said there is a lot of promising talent among the young players and stressed the need to identify the juniors from an early age.

“There is potential in the young players, it is only a matter of exposing the players to more international tournaments,” he said.

“We are preparing to travel to Canada for this year’s edition of Bodwell Basketball Schools Invitational tournament in December.

“We have a new team different from that of last year however the boys are indeed showing some improvement in their quality of play and we are happy with their performances.”

The Panthers current squad is made up of: Patrick Nhamburo, Charles Wilson, Nyasha Karimakuenda, Panashe Ndewe, Tinashe Changara, Noah Pinduka, Tafadzwa Madzika, Brian Nyaude, Anesu Mavezere, Anesu Siyawamwaya, Lawrence Madzimure, Larry Takura. - Blessings Mashaya
