Warriors’ free-fall continues
Thursday, 20 December 2012 10:24
HARARE - Zimbabwe's slide down the Fifa Rankings table continues unabated.

The Warriors dropped three places on the latest Fifa/Coca Cola rankings released yesterday.

According to the rankings table, the Warriors have slipped down the ladder from number 98 to 101.

The Warriors had risen to position 89 after beating Angola 3-1 in the first leg of the decisive African Nations Cup qualifier in October, but a 2-0 defeat by the same opponents in the second leg saw them revert back to position 98 in November before their latest plunge.

The Zimbabweans remain unchanged on the continental rankings, where they are place 26th in Africa. Africa has 54 official football teams with Mauritania on the tail-end of the rankings.

The Warriors, however, are hoping to climb up rankings when they resume their World Cup qualification quest, starting with a match against Egypt early next year.

Since the global rankings were established in 1991, the Warriors’ best ranking has been 40, which was attained in April 1995 while their worst ranking came in October 2009, when they were placed 131 in the world.

There was little movement in the world’s top 10 with world champions Spain staying atop of Fifa’s world rankings while Germany are number two with South American giants Argentina  occupying third place.

Ivory Coast remained Africa’s top-ranked team on the global rankings on position 14 followed by Algeria on position 19. - Blessings Mashaya
