HARARE - Wellington Kamudyariwa’s first half goal Gunner their first league win under coach Moses when they beat bottom club Quelaton in a Castle Premiership relegation clash yesterday.

This was Chando Kupisa’s first win since July 8 when they beat Hwange.

The 2008 champions winless run had gone for 10 matches, as they only picked up two points in draws against fellow strugglers Hardbody and Hwange.

Chunga’s team moved to 14th place on the log with 22 points from 25 matches while Quelaton remained rooted to the bottom of the log with a paltry 10 points.

Gunners started the game attacking the visitors at pace and were awarded free-kick outside the box when Quelaton player Mclive Phiri handled the ball.

Kamudyariwa took the set piece responsibility and curled his shot past the wall and it beat Kwela Kwela goalie Winstone Chiwetu.

The goal galvanised the home side, who went on to create a flurry of chances throughout the match but were let down by some wayward finishing.

In 23th minutes Gunner’s Munyaradzi Kunyarimwe failed to increase the lead when he chose to pass when he had the goal at his mercy.

The visitors’ best chance came four minutes later when Eddy Nkulungo beat a number of defenders before he had his ferocious shot expertly saved by Gunners’ goalie Clayton Dombo.

In the second half Quelaton showed more urgency but they failed to utilise the chances they created to find an equaliser.

After the match Gunners coach Moses Chunga was a happy man.

“The boys did not play well but I’m happy to collect maximum points. We need to continue winning in order to keep our relegation survival hopes alive,” Chunga said.

His counterpart Farayi Sibanda said: “I’m not happy with the result. The boys dominated the game however if you fail to utilise your chances you will get punished. We have done everything but the results are not coming.”
