Young Warriors still believe

HARARE - Zimbabwe Under-17 coach George Chigowe says his side will bank on their prolific away form in the Under-17 African Championships when they travel to Congo for the second round, second leg in two weeks’ time.

The Young Warriors’ quest for Under-17 African Championship qualification hangs by a thread after they fell 2-1 at home to Congo Brazzaville in the first leg at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday.

Chigowe is hopeful of pinning down the 2011 Under-17 African Championship bronze medallists in their own backyard.

“We still believe we can win in Congo. It’s not over yet we are going to fight,” Chigowe said.

“We have a good history playing away from home look what happened with South Africa we lost at home and went on to win there.

The same thing with Mozambique in the first round, we drew at home and went on win convincingly there.

So we are good travellers,” he said.

On Saturday Zimbabwe created few chances to trouble the central Africans who maintained shape throughout the match.

The home team were lacking in creativity and often guilty of over-elaboration.

It therefore came as no surprise that it was Congo who drew first blood.

Captain Binduka Handy’s powerful header thrust Congo into the lead after 25 minutes before Tinotenda Kadewere levelled matters with a spectacular effort outside the box in the 51st minute.

Three minutes from regulation time, second half substitute Obasi Ngatsoko ensured Congo come away with what could prove to be a crucial away victory after his powerful close range effort gave Zimbabwe goalie Tatenda Mukuruva no chance.

“We feel we had a good strategy. But you can see that all the goals Congo scored came through set pieces.

It wasn’t anything special and remember this is a side that has six players that were at the Under-17 Fifa World Cup (in Mexico), so they a good side,”Chigowe said.
