HARARE - Thieves broke into Takashinga Cricket Club in Highfield in the early hours of Saturday and got away with cash and a generator valued at over $ 1500, police said yesterday.

The money, believed to be proceeds generated from the club’s sports bar, was kept in a storeroom.  

Provincial police spokesperson, Tadious Chibanda, confirmed the incident, saying no arrest has since been made. Investigations are underway.

“From the look of things, it was easy for thieves to get away with money in this case because it seems there was no safe to protect the money,” Chibanda said.

Takashinga, regarded as a beacon of black cricket, was founded in the late 1990s and has produced some of the country’s finest cricketers. The club relies on donations and revenue from the sports bar, which has now fallen victim to the burglars.  

According to police, house breaking and unlawful entries are on an increase due to reluctance by most Zimbabweans to deposit their money in financial institutions.

During the just-ended festive season, police say they recorded an increase of house breaking cases which took place mostly in posh suburbs, where most businesspeople reside. - Xolisani Ncube
