Welcome to Zim, SuperSport!

HARARE - The wait is over, and I’m sure that everyone interested in Zimbabwean football will agree with me that the arrival of SuperSport on the domestic football scene is a giant step towards fully professionalism the game in the country.

There have been several twists and turns leading up to the agreement and it finally came as a relief when Africa’s leading sports broadcaster and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) inked a deal set to boost the financial status of local football clubs.

Who would forget the anticipation in the air last year when a deal appeared on the horizon, only for hopes to be dashed when spanners were thrown into negotiations at an advanced stage?

But as Chinua Achebe would probably say, here is one juicy morsel that good fortune put in local football’s mouth that no one dare deny us.

SuperSport’s arrival in Zimbabwe, other might say, was long overdue considering that other countries on the continent have since enjoyed the benefits of this lucrative partnership with the sports broadcasting giant.

But it’s better late than never.

While I will be the first to admit that our clubs have performed dismally in continental competitions in recent times — what is certain is that had it been not for the socioeconomic crisis that affected every facet of Zimbabwean life — we really should have wooed SuperSport much earlier than we did because our league has proved, despite recent results, to be one of the most competitive on the continent, even better than the ones already in partnership with SuperSport.

What is the greatest challenge now to the PSL management, other stakeholders and club themselves  is to make the most of this deal and show SuperSport viewers what they have been missing.
