HARARE - Zimbabwe's top elite triathlete Chris Felgate called time on his international career with a podium finish at Saturday’s annual Africa Cup in Troutbeck.

Felgate’s 20-year career ended on a high note after he finished second behind Henri Schoeman of South Africa.

Rudolf Naude, a runner up at last year’s event, finished in third place behind Felgate.

“It was an emotional weekend with a lot of effort put in by the Zimbabwe Triathlon Association (ZTA) for me,” Felgate told the Daily News yesterday.

“It was memorable to see ZTA and Troutbeck Hotel present me with gifts for my departure from international competition.”

In the race, newcomer Schoeman maintained his lead from start to finish, making Felgate content with his second place.

“Henri Schoeman led from start to finish and had a superb race, his form is still very good from World Championships three weeks ago.

“I stayed with Rudolf Naude on the swim and bike stages (when the rain became heaviest) and then on the run — managed to break away from him to finish second.”

Felgate, a veteran of two Olympics, paid tribute to everyone who had a hand in shaping his triathlon career.
