HARARE - Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai is expected to pay three oxen to his estranged wife’s parents as an apology for disgracing them, a lawyer involved in the case said yesterday.

This is part of a deal reached between Tsvangirai and Locardia Karimatsenga to end a nasty court case related to their ill-fated and short lived union.

The agreement, which the Daily News had sight of yesterday, was signed by Tsvangirai and his lawyer Innocent Chagonda, as well as Karimatsenga and her lawyer Jonathan Samukange.

“The first party (Tsvangirai) shall pay the second party (Karimatsenga) a lump sum. The second party acknowledges receipt of such payment. In addition the first party shall further deliver in person to the second party’s parents three oxen in fulfilment of criminal requirements,” reads part of the agreement.

“We asked him not to bring the cows this November as it is a sacred month. We are prepared to wait. We do not want to offend our custom,” said Samukange.

Tsvangirai struck a deal with Karimatsenga last week, leading to the withdrawal of her $15 000 monthly maintenance suit.

Karimatsenga dragged Tsvangirai to court to push for maintenance and also to foil the Premier’s planned wedding to current wife Elizabeth Macheka.

The wedding, held on September 15, was reduced to a customary union after Karimatsenga’s successful court application in which she claimed to be married to the Premier under the customary law. - Tendai Kamhungira
