No bail for thieving cops
Wednesday, 27 February 2013 10:32
HARARE - Two police officers who allegedly stole a plasma TV, laptops and other gadgets from the late Vice President John Landa Nkomo’s house in Bulawayo will continue languishing in remand prison.

Bulawayo magistrate Witness Mtetwa yesterday dismissed the cops’ quest for bail, saying they are a flight risk.

Costa Fandi (25) and Hillary Ncube (29) were posted to guard the house after Nkomo’s death but ended up looting property and meat, prosecutors say.

They are facing two counts of unlawful entry and theft.

As a result, the two will be in custody until March 11, when they return to court for trial.

It is alleged that between January 24, and February 20, this year, the two officers unlawfully and intentionally entered Nkomo’s house and stole personal and household property worth over $ 7000.

The alleged loot comprise a Toshiba laptop, plasma television set, a decoder, a Mercer card, laptop bag, digital headphones, Canon camera, United States representative silver sword, a set of binoculars and a Unido Headquarters trophy, vehicle laptop charger and a Nakai radio.

They reportedly sold the property to different people within Bulawayo and Gwanda.

Jabulani Nkomo, the director of Astra Building Centre, who is the late vice president’s son, discovered the offence and reported the matter to police, prosecutors say.

According to the State, most of property, except the meat, was recovered. Nyengera Tungamirai of Mcijo, Dube and Partners is representing the cops.
