Gono scraps ‘RBZ advisor’ post
Monday, 17 December 2012 13:27
HARARE - Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor Gideon Gono has abolished the RBZ advisor’s post in the wake of the firing of his advisor Munyaradzi Kereke early this year.

The central bank boss said the advisor’s post has been scrapped to save money.

“That post is abolished and it doesn’t exist anymore,” said Gono last week, with a smile on his face.

“We have removed the post of advisor to the RBZ governor for cost-saving reasons.”

Gono was embroiled in an acrimonious dispute with the maverick businessman, after relations soured with Kereke with the former advisor reported to be working behind his boss to undermine him.

Kereke later penned a letter to President Robert Mugabe, the Zanu PF politburo and service chiefs suggesting Gono’s continued tenure at the central bank threatened financial and economic interests of the state.

Kekere also accused security bosses of engaging in corrupt activities with Gono.

He also accused Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Finance minister Tendai Biti of corrupt collaboration with Gono.

Kereke has also been fighting journalists and media houses.

The feud spilled into Parliament, with Kereke writing to the august house seeking parliamentary protection to nail his former boss.

Kereke, who is facing damaging accusations of raping a minor, claimed his removal from the central bank was calculated to conceal Gono’s criminal activities with top government and security officials.

Kereke alleged the central bank chief stole cars, gold bullion and shares for direct personal benefit, a charge that earned him a multi-million dollar defamation claim from the central bank chief which is yet to be heard in the High Court.

He claimed some of these were shared with senior government officials and top security chiefs according to a letter he wrote to the anti-corruption commission. - John Kachembere
