HARARE - Ten people were injured when a minibus that was fleeing from municipal authorities burst tyres and overturned after municipal cops threw spikes in Harare’s Central Business District.

The injured were rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital.

Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident.

Eyewitnesses said the incident started along Harare Street and Albion Street when officers tried to arrest the vehicle for flouting municipal by-laws.

The minibus driver, in a bid to flee, reversed fast and hit a pavement slab, subsequently overturning.

Ten people in the minibus were injured, prompting mob justice.

A municipal police vehicle was damaged by the angry mob, baying for blood.

The angry mob viciously beat up the municipal officers prompting national police to intervene.

Anderson Moyo said he watched the accident unfold and put the blame squarely on the municipal cops.

“The impact heavily damaged the minibus and it sent it toppling over. It landed on its top and slid, coming to a rest after sending debris throughout the road”, he said.

Some people managed to get out of the minibus and run, while some had to be helped out by emergency responders.

Police spokesperson Nyathi warned minibus drivers not to put the lives of passengers in danger by running away from national and municipal police. - Staff Writer
