HARARE - The case of 29 Glen View murder suspects continue to drag on as the bid to secure the presence of a Cuban pathologist is proving fruitless, six months after the doctor was subpoenaed.
Prosecutor Edmore Nyazamba yesterday led evidence from Jeremiah Murenje, a police officer from the criminal investigations department’s law and order section.
Murenje told the court they were still waiting for a response from the Cuban government authorising Gabriel Aguero to testify in the case.
He said the police commissioner-general’s office held a meeting with the ministry of foreign affairs, in which the issue was discussed.
However, a foreign affairs official handling the case was unavailable yesterday to give evidence on the progress made so far.
The suspects’ lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa dismissed Murenje’s testimony, which she said was based on hearsay.
Only five of the suspects accused of murdering police inspector Petros Mutedza in 2011 remain in custody after their bid for freedom hit a brick wall last week.
The case continues today.
