HARARE - A Harare magistrate has jailed a National Railways of Zimbabwe security guard who callously attacked his four-month-pregnant wife for demanding food for the children.

Magistrate Lazarus Murendo sentenced Abraham Mamboininga to 35 months in prison for physically abusing his wife on three occasions.

Mamboininga was jailed for 32 months for the three counts.

A further three months were brought into effect from a previous prison term imposed last month on similar charges.

The complainant is Bridget Mukungwa.

The court heard Mamboininga arrived home at 11pm on October 14 this year and found Mukungwa sleeping with their twin-children aged 13 months.

Mamboininga started shouting at Mukungwa, accusing her of making a mistake and acting stupidly by withdrawing another assault charge against him.

He told her that she was going to die for that mistake before assaulting her.

The court heard Mamboininga packed his clothes and left for two hours.

Mukungwa reported the matter to the police the following morning.

The court heard Mamboininga was not moved by the report but instead insulted Mukungwa and advised her she was going to rely on the police on everything she wanted.

When Mamboininga came back from work, Mukungwa asked him to buy food for the children but he refused and started assaulting her while pulling her hair.

He further assaulted her with fists on her face, head and stomach several times.

When she tried to flee through the window, Mamboininga pulled her by the legs.

The court heard he tied Mukungwa’s leg on a curtain with a rope and loosened it when she screamed before leaving her to fall. - Tendai Kamhungira
