HARARE - Tables were turned against aspiring MDC legislator for Mbare Sten Zvorwadza who had gone to police to report political violence in the constituency as he became the accused.

Zvorwadza was granted $50 bail by Mbare magistrate Reuben Mukavhi for charges of causing political violence and breaching the Electoral Act.

He is jointly charged with five other MDC youths.

The businessman had gone to the police at Mbare Police station to check on the progress of the matter that he had reported on political violence that happened at Nenyere flats in Mbare on the eve of the March 16 referendum.

He was attacked by Zanu PF youths in the constituency for putting up posters on the Nenyere flats walls.

Instead of Zanu PF members being arrested, Zvorwadza and the five youths have been charged instead.

Zvorwadza appeared before the Mbare Magistrate Courts leg ironed whilst party members were handcuffed.

Zanu PF activist Plaxedes Jaravaza, also known  as Mbuya  Nehanda, filed  the complaint to the police alleging that she was beaten by Zvorwadza and MDC youths on March 16.

He was supported by Edmore Mubaiwa other Zanu PF supporters who were claiming that MDC members were the ones causing political violence in the constituency.

State prosecutor   Fanuel Mudzamiri opposed the bail application arguing that MDC activists were facing serious charges of political violence and were likely to cause more chaos in the constituency.

Denford  Halimani, the lawyer for Zvorwadza and his co-accused, said his clients were the ones who were attacked on March 16 and were good candidates for bail.

He rejected charges that they caused any political violence in the constituency and said they were innocent and had video evidence to prove to the contrary.

Zvorwadza was remanded out of custody to May 2 when the trial will kick off.
