HARARE - The MDC led by Industry and Commerce minister Welshman Ncube, which pulled from the Copac publicity campaigns, says it is going to run a parallel programme in order to get to all corners of the country.

Ncube’s MDC pulled out of Copac on the basis that Zanu PF and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC had connived to sideline their party in eight provinces that members of Copac are carrying out campaigns ahead of a referendum that is set for the 16th of this month.

Copac is the parliamentary body that has been steering the constitution-making process. It allocated provinces to political parties in terms of parliamentary representation, with Ncube being allocated only two provinces while Zanu PF and MDC are sharing the other eight provinces.

The move has riled the smaller MDC.

Zanu PF and the MDC, by far the largest political parties in terms of parliamentary representation, have vowed to go ahead with the process notwithstanding the protest pull out by the smaller MDC formation.

The latest setback however, does not change much as Ncube will go for the ‘‘Yes’’ vote parallel to Zanu PF and the MDC.

The smaller MDC’s spokesperson Nhlanhla Dube told the Daily News that the party’s decision to pull-out will not change their stance.

“We will be doing an aggressive outreach as a party to explain the contents of the draft and requesting people to vote ‘Yes,” Dube said.

“Copac has not printed enough copies in English, sign language or all the other local languages which are spoken in Zimbabwe. We will attempt to cover this gap and speak to as many Zimbabweans as possible about the contents of the draft to which we remain completely committed.”

The constitution-making process, which started in 2009, is nearing completion after the Principals agreed to a compromise charter that all sides agree is in their political interests.
