HARARE - With elections looming large, MDC deputy chairperson Morgan Komichi might last only four months in the fragile coalition government.

But that is not stopping him from putting across his thoughts as the newest and, most likely, last MDC man to be favoured with such high government office before next year’s elections.

President Robert Mugabe on Wednesday swore in Komichi to the post of deputy minister of Transport and Communication left vacant by the death of Tichaona Mudzingwa in April.

A fierce Tsvangirai loyalist, Komichi said he will bring a “few” ideas to the coalition government especially on troubled national airline, Air Zimbabwe.

Air Zimbabwe, the country’s flag bearer, is on the ropes and falls under Komichi’s ministry.

Like any new comer, without giving tangibles, he talks of hope even when his minister, Zanu PF strongman and former spy boss Nicholas Goche and the majority of stakeholders admit it is a tough route to Air Zimbabwe’s recovery.

“The solution lies in teamwork. People should not swallow more than they can chew and we need new ideas,” he said.

Then, again, he pinned hopes on synergies that have failed, at least according to the coalition government partners.

“I am hopeful that I will have a cordial working relationship with minister Goche because in government we will not be serving Zanu PF or MDC but the people of Zimbabwe. We are going to work as a team,” he said.

He is also staking the future on Goche’s principal, President Robert Mugabe, to deliver a fair election.

 “Mugabe will not allow elections without reforms because he knows what will happen if he goes for elections without the approval of the MDC and Sadc,” Komichi said matter of factedly.

“He wants to leave the legacy of a statesman and he wants to go away with the history of having brought freedom and peace in Zimbabwe. Mugabe is desperate to remove the violence tag,” said Komichi, second-guessing a man he had barely met until that Wednesday swearing in ceremony.
