Cops continue onslaught on civil society
Tuesday, 14 May 2013 11:07
HARARE - Police have continued their onslaught on civil society members, following the arrest of  Tawanda Chimhini, director for Election Resource Centre yesterday.

Chimhini was summoned and detained at  Harare Central Police Station on allegations of running an illegal voter education exercise in Harare through his organisation.

He joins three of his workmates who are still in police custody over the same charge.

Over the weekend, police arrested Farai Saungweme, Wadzanai Nyaku and Moses Chikura on allegations of contravening electoral laws that prohibit unauthorised persons from conducting voter education without permission from the country’s electoral body.

By last night, detectives from law and order section at Harare Central Police Station were still recording a warned and cautioned statement.

Chimhini is being represented by attorneys from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.

Since the talk of an election gathered momentum, police have been on a warpath, with human rights activists claiming to be the main targets.

Two weeks ago, police arrested 19 MDC supporters who were on a voter registration campaign programme and were charged with impersonating a public official.

Police have in the past arrested officials from ZimRights; an organisation involved in voter education among other human rights duties, on allegations of running an illegal voter registration exercise. - Staff Writer
