HARARE - Senate yesterday passed a bill for a new constitution, paving the way for President Robert Mugabe to append his signature before it becomes law.

There was jubilation after president of Senate Edna Madzongwe announced that the Bill had been given approval by two-thirds of the legislators present.

She said 75 senators voted for the adoption of the Bill. Minister of Constitutional Affairs Eric Matinenga introduced the bill explaining its 18 chapters to the Senators.

Four legislators debated it with Zanu PF chairperson Simon Khaya Moyo representing his party, David Coltart the smaller MDC faction, Sekai Holland represented the MDC led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai while Chief Musarurwa represented Chiefs.

They all agreed that the bill was home-grown and captured the views of the people.
