HARARE - Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s wife Elizabeth has told suffering families of 30 jailed activists that they should not despair because God is aware of their predicament.

In a moving speech that left some of the family members in tears, Elizabeth urged women whose spouses are in jail to soldier on.

She was handing over food hampers to families of the detained activists who are on trial for the murder of a policeman last year.

“Do not despair. Pay day is coming. We may not understand what is happening but every day you should know that God has greater things prepared for each one of you,” Elizabeth said to applause.

The hampers consisted of 40 kilogrammes maize meal, 10 kilogrammes sugar, 10 litres cooking oil, tea leaves, Kapenta fish, eight bars washing soap and other smaller goodies.

MDC national welfare secretary Lucia Matibenga said the gesture followed a plea by some family members for assistance.

Following the release of Cynthia Manjoro last week on bail, 30 activists remain in jail awaiting trial.
