Man commits suicide in idling car
Saturday, 02 March 2013 13:59
HARARE - A Harare man yesterday committed suicide in one the most bizarre ways — slitting his own neck with a knife at a traffic light-controlled intersection while sitting in an idling car.

Initially, motorists were annoyed when Francis Ngoneni Masuku’s double cab Isuzu KB vehicle remained stationary even though the robots had turned green — until one motorist saw blood gushing out of the car.

The incident occurred along Addington Lane near Borrowdale Primary School.

According to witnesses, the man knifed himself while sitting on the driver’s seat.

When the Daily News crew arrived at the scene, Masuku’s body had been taken out of the car and was lying lifelessly in the middle of the road while covered with a cloth. Police had blocked the road.

The reason behind his suicide remained unknown.

In Zimbabwe men are more prone to suicide than women, according to the World Health Organisation.

The UN agency ranks Zimbabwe number 56 out of 101 countries in the world when it comes to people killing themselves.

Masuku was identified as an executive at a top company in Zimbabwe.

His visibly shocked wife later arrived at the scene and had to be held back by friends and family members. - Bridget Mananavire
