A leader the youths need
Tuesday, 05 March 2013 10:20
HARARE - If the youths are to avoid curses of posterity and being branded generational failures, it is time they should embrace a democratic leader.

Democracy casts a mirror on human rights, equality, constitutionalism, transparency and accountability among young leaders.

Since independence, a system of polarisation and intolerance has been rife among youths, preached by politicians who practice politics of the belly.

This bred hatred created on the basis of political affiliation, ethnic grouping and tribalism.

As a result, violence and killings were used to curb the divergences in thinking and practice.

The youths should unite and show determination and elect a leader with policy volumes which are democratic and unifying.

Youths should uphold fundamental human rights practices and shun violence and intimidation.

Coverage at the State broadcaster, ZBC is still partisan and news provided is unbalanced and meant to instil fear. There is blatant favouritism.

Journalists are still being harassed and this is enough evidence that youths should be decolonised in their minds to realise the urgent need for democracy.

Youths should have the freedom to demonstrate against corruption by those in public office.

The youths should vote for a government that is conscious of the principle of respect and follows dictates of the supreme law.

By virtue of being kingmakers and making the highest number in the electorate, youths should not be intimidated or sell their precious vote for a meal.

The coming election should be another chance for the youth to do away with all leaders who did not perform well.

It’s time to elect not gifted politicians but gifted leaders. - Francis Mufambi
