In other words the new constitution cannot guarantee Zimbabweans their basic and fundamental right to a free vote; it will be left to the whim of a ruthless dictator whether or not they enjoy that right! But since Mugabe has no intention of losing the next elections that leaves the nation with a simple choice hand election victory to the dictator in a silver platter or he will use violence to snatch the victory. Either way the ordinary Zimbabwean will NOT have a free and democratic vote! If MDC leaders told the people the truth that this COPAC draft will not end the violence and safe guard their free vote; then the people will vote no in the upcoming referendum. A no vote will force the nation to draw up another constitution, one acceptable to the people, one that will guarantee their basic right to vote free of fear of political violence. Grace Chirenge said the nation’s fears of bloody polls are slowly being confirmed. Ms Chirenge is right of course - the nation has been matching towards "bloody polls" for the last four years. MDC have done nothing, absolutely nothing, to stop the nation travelling down this path. A number of reforms were agreed and a new democratic constitution, agreed in the GPA in 2008, were supposed to lead the nation away from the orgy of violence of 2008. Sadly not even one of the reforms were ever implemented and the Copac draft constitution negotiated with Mugabe will do nothing to end the political violence. Instead of framing the reforms and pushing them through and standing firm on minimum requirements for a democratic constitution Tsvangirai failed the nation on both issues. He was too busy globe-trotting and chasing women and the price to be paid is yet another "bloody" elections! The nation can be saved from having another bloody elections even now at this eleventh hour by rejecting the Copac draft and force veryone back to the drawing board of the reforms and new constitution. This will only happen if people wake up to the reality that Tsvangirai is leading them down a dangerous path.

International Federation of Human Rights (FIDH) and the World Organisation against Torture call "for the assistance of the AU, SADC and UN to implement the Global Political Agreement fully and to ensure the presence of local and international observers for the elections next year." Instead of being helpful, they are mudding the water. The GPA called for security sector reforms, for example, but it was then left to the two MDC factions to work out the details what these reforms would be. For the last four years no one has come up with the details; Prime Minister Tsvangirai, the leader of the main MDC faction has been too busy globe-trotting and chasing women to do that. So what reforms exactly does FIDH expect SADC to help implement? If they want to help here, FIDH should be asking PM Tsvangirai to take his duties seriously for once instead of encouraging his reckless behaviour and this wild-goose chase. Unless MDC get their act together as a matter of urgency and draft the reforms and amend the weak Copac draft constitution they have already endorsed; Mugabe will have the draft approved and then there will be nothing to stop him holding elections in with the usual vote rigging and violence. MDC must first come up with the reforms and only then can SADC can help force Mugabe to implement these reforms. SADC cannot force Mugabe to implement reforms that are not there! FIDH mean well but then the road to hell is paved with good intentions!

Here is an administration which was tasked in 2008 to implement a number of agreed democratic reforms and to write a new democratic constitution so that Zimbabwe can have free and fair elections whose result will be a true reflection of the democratic will of the people. Four and half years later, not even one of the reforms has been implemented and only the very naive believe any will be implement before the next elections. In four years and at a cost of nearly US$100 million they produced a Copac draft constitution so weak it will not guarantee anything much less the right to free and fair elections. After all that Matinenga has the audacity to tell Zimbabweans "We won’t fail!" What is he blubbering about; this is a failed and totally dysfunctional GNU that has achieved nothing ever since it was set up.
