HARARE - Harare residents yesterday demonstrated at Town House demanding cancellation of bills that accumulated during Zimbabwe’s hype-inflationary days.

Precious Shumba, the coordinator of vocal residents’ body, Harare Residents Trust (HRT), said residents wanted accountability from city fathers before being asked to pay exorbitant tariffs.

“Harare City Council is issuing final demands and eviction orders to residents yet there is no clean water, no refuse collection, no action on burst sewer pipes among other poor service delivery issues within the communities,” said Shumba, who led the demonstration.

“All we want from the council is accountability and good service delivery,” said Shumba.

According to the protesting residents, ratepayers are frustrated with incompetent and corrupt councillors who worry more about lining their pockets than service delivery.

“We hope this demonstration sends a clear message that the Harare City Council leadership should not take residents for granted. Now is the time to take action against poor service delivery,” Shumba said.

The residents handed a petition to deputy mayor Emmanuel Chiroto giving council until month end to address their grievances or risk more demonstrations.

Chiroto assured the residents that their grievances would receive serious attention.
