HARARE - Commercial Workers Union of Zimbabwe (CWUZ) secretary-general Joubert Mudzumwe and his messenger have appeared in court for allegedly stealing from the union.

Mudzumwe, 46, and his messenger Tafirenyika Mushonga, 40, who are facing theft charges, allegedly stole $41 000 from the union.

Prosecutor Tungamirai Chakurira told the court that between October last year and November this year, Mudzumwe and Mushonga together with John Chifamba and Felisters Hwazulu, who are still at large, allegedly connived and stole money from the union bank account.

The four, who are signatories to the union’s bank account, could at times allegedly withdraw money from the union’s bank account behind the members’ knowledge and convert it to their own use, the court heard.

It is allegedChifamba mobilised regional officers from Bulawayo, Masvingo and Chinhoyi to deposit money into Mushonga’s account where he withdrew it at different intervals.

The four could then get the money and use it without the authority of the union, the court was told.
Magistrate Anita Tshuma released the two on a $100 bail each.

They were ordered to reside at their given addresses and not to interfere with state witnesses as part of their bail conditions.

They will be back in court on December 5 for trial. - Irvine Zhakata
