‘I’ve no time for political meetings with parties’

HARARE - Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri says political parties seeking to hold political meetings” with him and other security chiefs are “day-dreaming”.

“I wish to take this opportunity to warn liars and peddlers of falsehoods, who dream talking to us in their sleep that the law will visit them harshly,” said a visibly agitated Chihuri while addressing a police sports gala in the capital.

The police commander warned those planning a meeting with him to discuss political and security matters to “go hang” as they are “confused”.

“I have no time to entertain people with no substance,” he said.

The hard-hitting comments by Chihuri come after Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC reportedly held private meetings with army and other security generals over a “post- (President) Robert Mugabe” era scenario.

It was reported in the press last week that MDC secretary for defence, Giles Mutsekwa had met some generals from the army and plans were in place for a meeting with senior police commanders and other top securocrats.

But according to Chihuri, the MDC formations, which are pushing for security sector reforms through are “hallucinating”.

“We are too busy to engage confused malcontents who do not know their identity and have a propensity to destroy what others, dead and alive, fought for.

“They must stop abusing the freedom and democracy that so many Zimbabweans died for,” Chihuri said.

The two MDC formations and Sadc — facilitators and guarantors of the power-sharing Global Political Agreement which brought about the inclusive government — have demanded security sector reforms before polls but Zanu PF and top police and army officials are blocking the move.

Chihuri and other security chiefs, who are viewed by analysts as the real power behind Mugabe’s continued stay in power, have publicly declared their allegiance to Zanu PF. - Xolisani Ncube
