Tuku returns to the ghetto
Friday, 30 November 2012 13:14
HARARE - Just like he sang in his old classic Ghetto Boy, it looks like you can’t take the ghetto out of Zimbabwe music legend Oliver Mtukudzi.

Tuku, who only last week was playing before packed houses in South Africa, will play at New Life Nite Club in Harare’s Budiriro suburb tomorrow.

The Katekwe icon will perform with a full band at the popular entertainment joint.

Budiriro-based sungura star Taruvinga Manjokota, better known in music circles as Sugar Sugar, will be the supporting act.

Sugar Sugar, whose music fortunes have taken a serious battering, will be hoping for Tuku’s magic to rub off on him.

New Life Nite Club proprietor Fidelis Ngove is delighted to have lured the music superstar to his joint for the second time.

“We have pulled off a major coup to bring him again”, said Ngove.

“When he first came to perform at New Life many fans doubted our capacity to host a Tuku concert since we are in the ghetto.

“Since we proved ourselves the first time he came, this time around we are expecting a crowd of not less than 2 000 people”.

Ngove is also delighted Sugar Sugar of Juliana fame has  the opportunity to prove he still has what it takes.

“This is Sugar Sugar’s first time to share the stage with a musician of Mtukudzi’s calibre”, he said.

“He is looking forward to this show and we hope the show is going to change his life in terms of his career; definitely this will help to re-energise his waning popularity”.

Tuku, with over 60 albums to his name, is currently riding high with his latest 12-track album titled Sarawoga.

The internationally-acclaimed star has toured Zimbabwe and South Africa to do a series of gigs as part of celebrating his 60th birthday. - Vasco Chaya
