Writers to meet on gender violence
Monday, 26 November 2012 13:00
HARARE - Zimbabwean writers will on Wednesday get the chance to contribute to the ongoing international commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence at the Book Café.

The writers will meet in a creative writing workshop of part of Pamberi Trust’s Literary and Gender Programme.

Since August this year, the group, which is open to all established and aspiring writers, has been meeting every month at the Book Cafe.

The monthly literary gatherings are usually led by an accomplished Zimbabwean writer.

Award-winning Zimbabwean writer Shimmer Chinodya, winner of the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the Noma Award for Publishing in Africa, and fellow award-winning writer, Petina Gappah have led discussions in the past.

As this month’s meeting falls within the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, the organisers are hoping that Zimbabwean writers will come in big numbers to engage on the theme.

The theme of this year’s campaign period is: “From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World — Let us challenge militarism and end violence against women”.

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence are every year commemorated between the International Day Against Violence Against Women on November 25 and the International Human Rights Day on December 10 in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasise that such violence is a human rights violation. - Entertainment Writer
