Musicians more important than dancers — Macheso

HARARE - Sungura ace Alick Macheso has advised dancers to desist from being carried away by crowd praise and remain humble if they are to excel in their careers.

Macheso’s plea comes as numerous dancers are elevating themselves above their band leaders.

The Tafadzwa hit maker said this making reference to his ex-dancer Peter Kagomere who failed to contain his pride and ended up indulging in immoral acts.

“Peter gave us a lot of problems, he failed to respect the entire Orchestra Mberikwazvo management, and he was big-headed. I once told him that even if you are massively talented in dancing, that does not matter because it is my music which makes you popular. Music comes before dancing, meaning one has to respect music then dance — one cannot dance where there is no music. "

“Dancers are what they are because of us,” Macheso said this in a side interview with the Daily News on Sunday at an anti-piracy function held in the capital last week.

The troublesome Kagomere, 24, recently performed unpaid work as part of his jail sentence after he bit a police officer who wanted to arrest him for being drunk, violent and disorderly.

His altercation with the police among other problems resulted in his job loss at the mighty Orchestra Mberikwazvo band.

Owing to his massive dancing skills he was roped in by the Sexy Angels outfit and he became the only male dancer in the group but was later sacked for his indiscipline.
