Poets commemorate eradication of poverty
Wednesday, 03 October 2012 13:24
HARARE - The country’s dramatic wordsmiths are scheduled to amuse poetry buffs this Saturday at Book Café in Harare.

The poets will be joining the world in commemorating International Day for the Eradication of Poverty marked for October 17.

The House of Hunger Poetry Slam is a project by Pamberi Trust, an arts development organisation in Harare that runs arts-related programmes.

The theme for this particular poetry slam is “Poetry against Poverty”.

International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed on October 17 each year since 1993.

It promotes people’s awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution worldwide.

Pamberi Trust has also lined up a treat for jazz lovers with the annual October International Jazz Festival scheduled for October 17 to 21 to quench the craving of this musical genre’s fans.

The organisers for the festival are promising the best show ever as it will be featuring the best local jazz artistes.

It will also attract performers from as far afield as Italy and others from neighbouring South Africa.

“The festival is promising to be explosive with the music feast and rainbow of genres reaching across borders, contributing through jazz to a rich pool of world music, and celebrating freedom of expression,” said Penny Yon of Pamberi Trust.

The festival will run for one week with several performances across the city at venues that include the Book Café, Celebration Centre and Italian Club.

The festival is also directed towards educating young musicians of Zimbabwe.

“There is a music workshop and schools programmes that are meant to benefit local talent at Book Café, Celebration Centre, and the Murehwa Cultural Centre,” said Yon. - Kaleen Gombera
