BULAWAYO - Civic society activist Dumisani Nkomo has come up with a political satire based on the adaptation of the biblical story of Esther.

The play Hadassah, which aims to cultivate a sense of destiny and purpose amongst the struggling Zimbabwean populace, will be launched on December 1, at the Victory Fellowship.

Bulawayo-based Victory Arts, an ensemble from Victory Fellowship, will form the cast.

Nkomo-a director of Habakkuk Trust and spokesperson of the Matabeleland Civic Society Forum has come up with an innovative production that combines drama, dance, mime and poetry.

Nkomo, who will direct the play himself, hopes to use medium of theatre to influence Zimbabweans.

“I was inspired by a burning desire to cultivate a sense of destiny and purpose especially amongst young people”, said the Bulawayo activist.

“This play is a scintillating adaption of the biblical story of Esther and how she saved an entire nation from destruction through her boldness and ability to speak truth to power.

“More importantly, the play is a multiple genre production which embodies poetry, dance, mime and drama.”
Nkomo feels the church can have more impact if they think outside the box.

“I feel there is a need to communicate the gospel in a more creative manner and to provide Christians with clean, edifying entertainment  instead of complaining about or condemning so-called worldly  productions or entertainment.”

Nkomo, an outspoken supporter of devolution and a vocal critic of the Gukurahundi massacres, is not new to the world of theatre.

He has written at least five other plays including Wethembekile, a prophetic play that predicted the emergence of the Government of National Unity (GNU).

His other plays are Mama Africa, Londolozela and When the Lord.
