Tough act to follow for Macheso in UK

Alick Macheso
HARARE - Sungura ace Alick Macheso, who leaves for the United Kingdom (UK) tomorrow, has his work cut out for him.

The Tafadzwa hitmaker wades into the UK in the wake of two highly successful joint shows held there by Zimbabwe’s most eminent musicians Thomas Mapfumo and Oliver Mtukudzi two weeks ago.

Mukanya and Tuku’s shows in London and Leicester left many doubters with egg on their face particularly dancehall artiste Winky D who recently composed a song dissing Mapfumo as a spent force.

Unlike in previous years, Macheso leaves for the UK on the back of a current album which has failed to excite the market. The sungura ace’s latest album Kwatakabva Mitunhu (Kure Kwekure) is regarded by many as a far cry from his previous productions.

Macheso, though, will feel encouraged by the successful tour of South Africa recently.

The Vapupuri Pupurai songmaker has lined up a show in Surrey on March 29 and in Leicester the following day.

Orchestra Mberikwazvo band manager William Tsandukwa told the Daily News that the tour is meant to market the group’s latest and ninth album Kwatakabva Mitunhu (Kure Kwekure).

“This is our first UK trip this year and the trip is meant to market our latest album,” he said.

Tsandukwa said the Tafadzwa hitmaker is travelling with only 10 members of his Orchestra Mberikwazvo Band to minimise travelling costs. - Vasco Chaya
