HARARE - Superstar Oliver Mtukudzi has encouraged artistes to uphold responsible public conduct on and off stage since their success in the arts sector hinges on model character.

“Artistes should mirror the kind of society they come from. They reflect what Zimbabwe is to the world. If you sing well, outsiders will praise what Zimbabweans do. Don’t take your role lightly, ”Mtukudzi said.

Tuku, who was the guest of honour at the maiden National Arts Merit Awards ceremony in Bulawayo on Saturday night, castigated artistes who spoil the name of the industry by living irresponsibly.

Artistes, he said, should never allow fame to get into their heads lest it destroys them and their source of livelihood.

“We have a huge responsibility especially when you are off stage,” the Zimbabwe music legend added.

Mtukudzi who is Zimbabwe’s most celebrated artiste alongside Thomas Mapfumo and is a Unicef goodwill ambassador has maintained integrity in the face of fame and fortune.

Tuku also took time to encourage seasoned artistes to groom young artistes who have an interest in the arts and culture industry.

“To those of us who have long experience in the industry, let us help upcoming youngsters realise their dreams. Go back to where you grew up and nurture talent,” a passionate Mtukudzi said.

 Tuku has over the years groomed many young artists who are now seasoned in their own right through his Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton which promotes every facet of arts and culture.

 The centre has churned out musicians, poets, sculptors, dancers and writers and it is the superstar’s way of giving back to the community which has made him a living legend.

Tuku also encouraged the National Arts Council to spread Nama to every city in Zimbabwe so that the event assumes truly national character and captures every artistic talent in all places in Zimbabwe. - Nyasha Chingono
